Divine Intervention

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word.

- Psalm 119:67

Jonah was God’s child. He was a believer — a wayward, disobedient one, but a believer nonetheless. The Bible says this about God’s children: “For whom the Lord loves He chastens...” (Hebrews 12:6). Because God loves us, He will seek to get our attention when we are going the wrong way.

We all know what that is like. When we are about to do something we know you shouldn’t do, there is that check inside, a sense of conviction from the Holy Spirit saying, “Don’t do this. This is the wrong direction.”

Sometimes God will even put blockades in our path. We are about to do something we shouldn’t when something happens to stop us. We say, “Lord, you are making this hard.”

He says, “That’s because I love you. You’re making a mistake, and I don’t want you to go the wrong direction.”

David said, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word” (Psalm 119:67). In other words, “Before I tasted the sting of discipline, I was doing whatever I wanted. But now, Lord, you have caught my attention. Now I have kept your word.”

Sometimes when we disobey the Lord, we will not experience the results of it immediately. But at other times, the consequences will come quickly. That’s how it was with Jonah.

The devil will always use your sin in a condemning way to drive you from the cross. But the Holy Spirit will convict you of your sin in a loving way to draw you to the cross. Satan will say, “God will never hear you.” But God will say, “Come to me, turn from that sin, and I will forgive you.”

A Godly Foundation

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth. . . .—Ecclesiastes 11:9

There are so many challenges facing the youth of today as their friends are drinking, smoking, doing drugs, and having sex. They tend to think they are indestructible, with long lives ahead of them.

But in many ways, my generation faced the same challenges. When I look at my friends from high school, I see the toll their lifestyle has taken. I see the alcoholism and drug addiction and broken marriages and estranged children. And of those I know who have chosen the lifestyle that so many youth are now choosing, not one is happy today. But when you are young, you don’t think about repercussions. You don’t think about things catching up with you.

Listen to the words of Solomon, specifically directed to young people: “ ‘Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes . . .’ ” (Ecclesiastes 11:9). It almost sounds as if Solomon were saying, “Go for it. Do whatever you want.” But then he added, “ ‘But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment’ ” (verse 9).

Solomon then gave this wise counsel: “ ‘Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw near when you say, “I have no pleasure in them” ’ ” (Ecclesiastes 12:2). In other words, Solomon was saying, “Get right with God now. Start developing godly patterns and godly habits in your life.”

If you are young (or young at heart) those patterns and habits will be the foundation and grid you will build on for years to come.

He Paid the Fare

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

—Romans 6:23

God called Jonah to go and preach in Nineveh, a notoriously wicked city. Not only that, but Nineveh was also an enemy of the Israelites.

So when God said to Jonah, an Israelite, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it” (Jonah 1:2), Jonah didn’t want to go. He knew if the people of Nineveh didn’t repent, they would be judged. And he thought, I know the Lord. He has this tendency to forgive people. I really don’t want Him to forgive them. I don’t want Him to give Nineveh another chance.

But God told Jonah to get up and go, so he got up and went. But he went the other way. Instead of going 500 miles northeast to Nineveh, Jonah attempted to go 2,000 miles west to Tarshish. The Bible tells us, “He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord” (Jonah 1:3). Jonah paid the fare to live in disobedience to God.

This is something we should know about sin. It will cost us. Sin is very expensive. Sometimes businesses promise a product or service now, with no payments until later. We love this, because it seems as though we are getting something free. But payday will come, with interest.

The devil says, “Play now. You won’t have to pay.” But sin will always cost us. Jonah paid the fare. Adam’s sin cost him paradise. David’s sin cost him his family and reputation. Samson’s sin ultimately cost him his life. What is your sin costing you?

This Week's Song For God On The iPod Series - Savin' Me by Nickelback

God On The iPod Finishes Downloading This Wednesday

God On The iPod

I am finishing this week with part three of a three week series for our student ministry FUSE STUDENT MINISTRY, GOD ON THE iPOD, this Wednesday night.

Savin' Me
By Nickelback

Prison gates won't open up for me
On these hands and knees I'm crawlin'
Oh, I reach for you
Well I'm terrified of these four walls
These iron bars can't hold my soul in
All I need is you
Come please I'm callin'
And oh I scream for you
Hurry I'm fallin'

[CHORUS]
Show me what it's like
To be the last one standing
And teach me wrong from right
And I'll show you what I can be
Say it for me
Say it to me
And I'll leave this life behind me
Say it if it's worth saving me

Heaven's gates won't open up for me
With these broken wings I'm fallin'
And all I see is you
These city walls ain't got no love for me
I'm on the ledge of the eighteenth story
And oh I scream for you
Come please I'm callin'
And all I need from you
Hurry I'm fallin'

[CHORUS]

Hurry I'm fallin'

Let us download a few passages from God's Word

John 8:31-36 - 31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Psalm 142:1-7 - 1 I cry aloud to the LORD;
I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.

2 I pour out my complaint before him;
before him I tell my trouble.

3 When my spirit grows faint within me,
it is you who know my way.
In the path where I walk
men have hidden a snare for me.

4 Look to my right and see;
no one is concerned for me.
I have no refuge;
no one cares for my life.

5 I cry to you, O LORD;
I say, "You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living."

6 Listen to my cry,
for I am in desperate need;
rescue me from those who pursue me,
for they are too strong for me.

7 Set me free from my prison,
that I may praise your name.
Then the righteous will gather about me
because of your goodness to me.

As I hear this song and read the lyrics from the artist, I honest believe King David couldn't of written it any better.

The passionate cry of the artist in this song…it sounds like a desperate cry. They sound like the cries of David throughout the book of Psalms and even the cries of Paul while in prison.

This sounds like the cry that we as Christians need to have…calling out to God. This is a cry of worship and surrender.

3 Cries from this song…

1. Cry For Freedom - Psalm 118:5 - In my anguish I cried to the LORD,
and he answered by setting me free.

2. Cry For Help – Psalm 18:6; - In my distress I called to the LORD;
I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. Psalm 30:2 - O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me.
Psalm 121:1 - I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from?

3. Cry For Victory – Psalm 60:12; - With God we will gain the victory, and he will
trample down our enemies. Psalm 54:7 - For he has delivered me from all my troubles,
and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.

The Challenge - I want to challenge you to allow these cries to scream out from your heart with passion. Our cries will never go unheard...we have an awesome living God who hears our cry. We have an awesome Savior who is ready to be involved in our life. All we need to do is cry out...

Closing Verses - Psalm 34:17-18 - 17The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 55:16-17 - 16But I call to God,
and the LORD saves me.
17 Evening, morning and noon
I cry out in distress,
and he hears my voice.

Remaining Vertical With God

When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly. - 1 Peter 2:23

Have you ever been wrongfully accused? Oh, the need to defend and justify becomes so great. "What will people think if they believe these things are true?" we reason. Imagine what Jesus thought as they hurled insults and threats upon Him. The God of the universe had visited planet earth only to be slandered and accused of blasphemy.

Jesus could have done two things in response. He could have used His power to put the people in their place. He could have responded "horizontally." He could have fixed the problem right then. However, He chose to respond in a different way. He chose to "entrust Himself to Him who judges justly." It requires great faith to entrust ourselves to God in the midst of personal assault. However, if we can do this, we will discover a level of grace and wisdom that will be birthed from this experience that we never thought possible. We will discover a freedom in God we never knew before. Whenever we suffer for righteousness without seeking to protect our reputation and rights, we are placing our total faith in the one who can redeem us. This activates God's grace in our lives and enables us to experience God's presence like never before.

Ask God to give you the grace to stay vertical with Him. Avoid the temptation of responding horizontally each time some event comes into your life that you want to "fix." Entrust yourself to the one who judges justly. It may be a divine appointment for your growth to another level in grace.

Plans for Good

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” —Jeremiah 29:11

Have you ever tried to run from God and His will for your life? Perhaps you thought you had a better plan than God did. Or perhaps certain truths were taught in Scripture that you simply did not want to follow.

Then again, it may have been the calling of God on your life to do or not do a certain thing. It might even have been a calling to serve Him, but you flatly refused.

I wonder why we are like that. What is it in our feeble human minds that cause us to think we know better than God? Perhaps we have a warped concept of His nature. But one thing that is clear in the Bible is the fact that God is good.

We see this truth repeated again and again. David said, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). And we read again in the Psalms, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!” (Psalm 107:1). The prophet Jeremiah brought the word of the Lord to the exiles in Babylon: “ ‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope’ ” (Jeremiah 29:11). God’s plans for you are for good, and they are better than your plans for yourself.

God has an obvious advantage over all of us. He has complete foreknowledge. He knows everything that will happen in our lives. He is molding us into men and women of God. He is seeking to unfold His plan for our lives.

My God Shall Provide

And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:19

Have you ever gone through a time of complete dependence on God for your material needs? Perhaps you lost a job and could not generate income on your own. Perhaps you got sick and could not work. There are circumstances in our lives that can put us in this place.

When God brought the people of Israel out of Egypt through the desolate desert, they had no ability to provide for themselves. God met their needs supernaturally each day by providing manna from Heaven. Each day they would awake to one day's portion of what they needed. This was a season in their lives to learn dependence and the faithfulness of God as provider. By and by, they entered the Promised Land. When they did, God's "supernatural provision" was no longer required. "The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of Canaan" (Josh. 5:12). In both cases God was the provider of the need.

For most of us, we derive our necessities of life through our work. Like the birds of the fields we are commanded to go out and gather what God has already provided. It is a process of participation in what God has already provided. Sometimes it appears it is all up to us; sometimes it appears it is all up to God. In either case we must realize that the Lord is our provider; the job is only an instrument of His provision. He requires our involvement in either case.

You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your forefathers, as it is today (Deuteronomy 8:17-18).

Acknowledge the Lord as the provider of every need you have today. He is a faithful provider.

Living an Obedience-Based Life

They trusted in Him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. - Daniel 3:28b

Have you ever known someone who lived an outcome-based Christian experience? This means that their decisions are made based on the positive or negative outcome, not on absolute obedience.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were three men who lived an obedience-based life. When King Nebuchadnezzar passed a law that said all were to worship his idol, these young men determined they would not worship anything other than God. You can be sure these men did not make this decision at the time of the decree. Their decision actually had been made years earlier. Their convictions were already in their hearts.

Each of us must come to a place of knowing what our boundaries are in given situations. What will you tolerate from your employer? What situation crosses the line for you? Where are the boundaries for questionable practices in your life? If these are not worked out ahead, you will live a life of situational ethics, determining what decision to make based on the merits of the situation.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were willing to die for what they believed. In this case, they were delivered from the fiery furnace. God used their faithfulness to impact a king, and they were promoted to higher positions.

Are you an obedienced-based Christian? Or are there situations that can move you based on the outcome? God wants to know that we will stand firm on the issues that are important to Him, no matter what the outcome may be. God is looking for those who are radical in their obedience. Does this describe your commitment to Christ? If not, pray for this kind of conviction. The Lord will honor you for this.

Just Like Us

“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

—James 5:16

When we read the words of James 5:16, which says, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much,” we might think, “That counts me out. I am not a righteous person.”

In a technical sense, this is true of all of us. None of us are flawless. But in another sense, those of us who have put their faith in Christ are righteous, because He has deposited His righteousness into our account. And without a doubt, His credit is good in the bank of heaven.

The Bible says, “But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30). Christ has become our righteousness. And the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man or woman avails much.

James then cites the example of a greatly admired righteous man: “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit” (verse 17–18).

When we think of Elijah, we often remember his outrunning chariots, raising the dead, calling fire down from heaven, and stopping the rain with his prayers. He seemed almost superhuman. What we forget is that after his great contest with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, he ran when he heard that Queen Jezebel was so outraged that she wanted him killed.

He was a man just like us, with the same vulnerability. So if Elijah could still muster up the faith to believe God for great things, surely we can do the same.

When to Pray

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.

—James 5:13

When we find ourselves in trying circumstances, often the temptation is to strike out at the person who helped bring those circumstances upon us. Or, we want to blame someone for our state of affairs. We may even become mad at God for allowing this in our lives. Or, we might wallow in self-pity.

But when we are afflicted, when we are suffering, or when we are in trouble, God tells us what we should do: pray. For one thing, it just may be that God might remove that problem because of our prayers. That is not to say that God will always take our afflictions, suffering, or troubles away. But it is to say that sometimes He will. Why?

By simply bringing our circumstances before the Lord and acknowledging our need and dependence on Him, we can see God intervene in the situation we are presently facing. Prayer can also give us the grace we need to endure trouble and be brought much closer to God.

James 5:13 tells us, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. . . .” The word “suffering” used here could also be translated “in trouble” or “in distress.” Is anyone among you in trouble? Are you distressed? Then you should pray.

So when the bottom drops out, when you feel you are just hanging by a thread, when circumstances have become incredibly difficult, or when they have grown worse by the minute, what should you do? You should pray.

You should pray when you are afflicted. You should pray when you are sick. You should pray when you are corrupted by sin. And you should pray when specific needs occur. Pray, and don’t give up.

Songs in the Night

The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me — a prayer to the God of my life.

—Psalm 42:8

The great British preacher C. H. Spurgeon said, “Any fool can sing in the day. It is easy to sing when you can read the notes by daylight. But the skillful singer is he who can sing when there is not a ray of light to read by. Songs in the night come only from God. They are not the power of men.”

When Paul and Silas were imprisoned for preaching the gospel, it was a hot and horrible environment. Prisons back then were far more primitive than they are today. Archaeologists have discovered what they believe was the actual prison where Paul and Silas were imprisoned as recorded in Acts. It was nothing more than a dark hole, without ventilation.

But instead of cursing God and questioning how a God of love could do this to them, they realized it was time to pray. The Bible tells us, “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25). Songs, not groans, came from their mouths. And instead of cursing men, they were blessing God. No wonder the other prisoners were listening!

When we are in pain, the midnight hour is not the easiest time to hold a worship service. There are times when we don’t feel like singing to the Lord or praising Him. But Hebrews 13:15 reminds us, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.”

Are you facing a hardship today? God can give you songs in the night.

I have been approved for my License To Preach from the Assemblies Of God

Last week, Lora and I had our interview with our district (Potomac District Council) leaders so I can go to te next level of ministry within the Assemblies of God - License To Preach. This is the second level of ministry within the Assemblies.

Well today I received a letter in the mail today saying that the District Credentials Committee approved my application with their endorsement to the General Council of the Assemblies of God.

I am very excited about this accomplishment as I seek to grow in ministry and go to the highest level of ministry within the Assmeblies of God.

The third and final level is Ordination, which I have to wait atleast two years before I can obtain that level.

It is very important to me that I continue to grow and learn in ministry as I strive and study to reach the highest level within my calling.

Just wanted to share my excitement.

Later,
Chris
