Wanted: New Believers

"And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved." -Acts 2:47

I love new believers. They are the lifeblood of the church.

When I have the privilege of speaking to other pastors, I tell them that if they don't have a constant flow of new believers coming into their congregations, they will become spiritually dead. We can either evangelize or fossilize.

Show me a church in which new believers are not coming in, and I'll show you a church that is stagnating. Show me a church that has new believers coming in on a regular basis, and I'll show you a church that has vibrancy and life.

That said, new believers need older believers to stabilize them. New believers' hearts are full of zeal, but they don't understand the ground rules yet. They need older believers to teach them.

Older believers also need new believers. They need their zeal. They need their passion. They need their excitement to remind them of what they have forgotten.

Sadly, it is usually the new believers who want to do the most when they know the least. When we ask people to help out with something at Harvest Christian Fellowship, we often have new believers who come and say they want to help: "I will do whatever you need. I would like to sign up for six ministries."

While we are very appreciative of their willingness to serve, we want them to have a good foundation first, so they can be properly trained and equipped to do what God has called them to do.

On the other hand, there are older believers who have known the Lord for years, maybe even decades, who don't give a passing thought to helping out at church. It should be just the opposite.

Contemplating the Cross

"How we thank God, who gives us victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ our Lord!" 1 Corinthians 15:57

I heard about a man who was trying to start his own religion, but it wasn't going very well so far. He decided to approach the French statesman, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand, and ask him what he should do to gain converts. The statesman told him, "I recommend that you get yourself crucified, die, and then rise again on the third day."

Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection on the third day is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. It is what sets our faith as Christians apart from the faith of all others.

Many view Christ's crucifixion as a rude interruption of what was an otherwise successful ministry. But the cross was at the forefront of the mind of Jesus Christ from the very beginning. This is where He knew He was headed, and He spoke of it often.

The Bible even tells us that before He even came to this earth, a decision was made that He would ultimately go to the cross. Scripture calls Him "the Lamb who was killed before the world was made" (Revelation 13:8).

It was at the cross that the righteous demands of God were satisfied. It was at the cross that God and humanity were reconciled once again. It was at the cross that a decisive blow was dealt against Satan and his minions. It was at the cross that our very salvation was purchased.

Therefore, we cannot talk about the cross too much or contemplate it too often.

Prayers Of God's Promise for Torin Christopher - Day 7

Psalm 91:11 - For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

Lord, we indeed pray that you will command the angels to guard our little angel Torin. Guard him in all of his ways as seeks and lives out his faith and he walks according to You will and plan for his life. Thank you for you care over our son. In Your Most Precious Name, the Name above all names we pray. Amen

By Faith

"For we walk by faith, not by sight." -2 Corinthians 5:7

It is no coincidence that the phrase, "walk by faith," is used in Scripture. Notice that Scripture doesn't tell us to sprint by faith; it tells us to walk by faith. To walk speaks of continual, regulated motion. The Bible says Enoch walked with God.

Many believers have their bursts of energy. For a few months, they run. Then they collapse for a while. They need to learn what it is to walk with God.

Of course, we like things fast. We have microwave dinners, e-mail, cell phones, and instant messaging. We have so much technology to make our lives a little easier and, most importantly, faster.

Then, when we come to the Christian life, we say, "All right, what's the angle? What's the shortcut?" Here it is: "The just shall live by faith" (Romans 1:17). It's a day-by-day process.

We are always looking for the angle, for the inside track. But it's very simple. The Bible declares that the just shall live by faith. Not by feeling. Not by emotion. Not by fear. Not by worries. By faith.

I know that sometimes it seems like nothing is happening in terms of our spiritual growth. There are times when we don't really feel like we are changing, because as we look at ourselves every day, we don't necessarily see any changes. But as we are walking by faith day by day, month by month, and year by year, we are being transformed.

Colossians 2:6 tells us, "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving."

That's it. The just shall live by faith.

Prayers Of God's Promise for Torin Christopher - Day 6

Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Dear Lord, we continue to give You praise for our little boy. It is our hope that Torin Christopher would exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in his life. We pray that he would love others like You love him. He ask that he would experience such a great joy in his that only You can provide for him. We pray that he would live a life of peace that transcends all understanding. We pray he can live out his life with longsuffering. We pray that Torin would live his life with such gentleness. Lord, as Torin experiences Your goodness, I pray he would share that goodness with others. We ask that Torin would live a life of faith. We ask that Torin would be meek in spirit and attitude. Help our little guy have a life full of temperance. We pray these fruits over Torin's life because we know against such things there is no law. In Your Precious Name Jesus we pray, Amen.

Striking at the Root

"For I decided to concentrate only on Jesus Christ and his death on the cross." -1 Corinthians 2:2

Over the years, I have received many letters inviting me to get involved with a certain cause or to join a boycott or a march. I admire people who get out there and want to stand up for what is right, and I think that we as Christians need to make our presence known in this culture and society.

But I personally have chosen to strike at the root of the problem, which is sin. I have chosen to seek to help this society by preaching the gospel, because I have found that a change in one's lifestyle does not bring about salvation. But true salvation will always bring about a change in one's lifestyle.

When the apostle Paul went to Rome, there were many social ills that he could have addressed. Instead, he chose to strike at the root of the problem.

Rome was a city filled with slaves, yet Paul would not center his preaching on slavery. Rome was a city of rampant immorality, but Paul's message did not center on moral reform. Rome was a city of financial corruption, but Paul would not center his preaching on the problems of the day.

His message was simple. He struck at the root. He gave them the gospel.

I can work to bring reform and morality to my culture and society. I can even work to help get laws passed that would slow down the spread of sin and corruption.

But if I can lead others to Christ, then their morals and their lifestyles will ultimately change. Not only will they have the hope of heaven, but they will also be different people in our society and culture.

Cornhole Feeds my Competive Fire

I have recently become an active competitor of the game cornhole. Simply put I love the sport of cornhole, very intense and draining on the the physical body and the mind. I put a lot of mental preparation into becoming the best cornhole player that I can be. I have also gotten back in the gym as of late to train physically. I will never back down from any competition and I will always bring my "A" game.

Now there is a Mockumentry for the sport that I am involved in. With the sport becoming so big I am just worried about the potential of steroid and HGH abuse from those players who are going try to get an edge in this game.

Check out Cornhole - The Movie

People Reaching People

"Yet faith comes from listening to this message of good news--the Good News about Christ." -Romans 10:17

It is worth noting that no person in the New Testament came to faith apart from the agency of a human being. Have you ever stopped and thought about that? We can find example after example.

There was the Ethiopian (see Acts 8:26-39). There are many ways that God could have reached this man from a distant country. He could have sent an angel to meet him. Instead, the Lord sent an angel to Philip and told him to go. So Philip went and proclaimed the gospel to that man, and he believed.

Then there was the Philippian jailer (see Acts 16:27--34). God could have reached him in many ways. Instead, He allowed Paul and Silas to be incarcerated and to ultimately proclaim the gospel, bringing that man and his family to faith.

We can think of Cornelius, a man who was searching for God (see Acts 10). An angel spoke to him and told him he needed to meet a man named Simon Peter. The angel explained where to find him. The angel could have given him the gospel. But God chose to use Simon Peter.

What about Saul? While it is true that he was converted through an encounter with Christ on the Damascus Road, his conversion was sandwiched between experiences with two people who influenced him. First, it was the witness of Stephen that softened Saul's heart and made it receptive to the seed of the Word when he was confronted by Jesus Christ. Afterward, God sent Ananias to follow up on Saul and pray for him to receive the power of the Holy Spirit.

So you see, God used people. And He wants to use you.

Prayers Of God's Promise for Torin Christopher - Day 1

I am going to use my blog to pray God's Word, His promises for our son Torin Christopher. I know I will not be a perfect father, but I do know God's Word is perfect and all of God's promises are yes and amen, For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory - 2 Corinthians 1:20.

Each day, Lora and I as we do our devotion time together we will specifically pray the power of God's Word over our little boy. It is my hope that when Torin gets older he can look at the prayers that his mother and I prayed for him and it would be a marker of his spiritual heritage. I also hope that each of you would stand with us in agreement with these prayers that we are praying from our hearts, "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." Matthew 18:19-20.

Prayer
Psalm 116:6-I will guard those who have a childlike heart.
Lord, we pray this promise over Torin. We pray that Torin will have a childlike heart even as grows older, that he would keep his innocence and stay pure before you. As Torin, keeps this childlike heart, Lord we pray that you would guard and protect him from the things that enemy would try do to destroy his life. We thank you oh God that you will guard our son as He keeps a childlike heart according to Your promise in Your Word. We thank you Lord for this precious promise. Through the power and the authority of You Holy Word and the power of Your name, Amen.

The Strength of Brokenness

"The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength." - 1 Samuel 2:4

There is an oxymoron throughout the Bible. It says that brokenness is strength. How can this be? How can brokenness be strength? In order to use men and women to their fullest extent, the Lord has to break His servants so that they might have a new kind of strength that is not human in origin. It is strength in spirit that is born only through brokenness.

Paul was broken on the Damascus road. Peter was broken after Jesus was taken prisoner. Jacob was broken at Peniel. David was broken after his sin with Bathsheba. The list could go on of those the Lord had to break in different ways before they could be used in the Kingdom.

When we are broken, we see the frailty of human strength and come to grips with the reality that we can do nothing in our own strength. Then, new strength emerges that God uses mightily. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Do not fear brokenness, for it may be the missing ingredient to a life that emerges with a new kind of strength and experience not known before. Pray for a broken and contrite heart that God can bless. Brokenness also brings you to a place of desperation and dependence on God and His ability to work a miracle in your life.

I want to challenge each you to allow yourself to be broken before the Almighty God.

Love the raw emotion of this song.

"Broken"

I wanted you to know I love the way you laugh
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain away
I keep your photograph, I know it serves me well
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain

'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I wanna hold you high, you steal my pain away
There's so much left to learn, and no one left to fight
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain

[x2]
'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

The Message Proclaimed

"And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!' " -Romans 10:14-15

From the original Greek, we could translate the final question in Romans 10:14 as, "How shall they hear without one preaching?" The Phillips translation puts it this way, "How can they hear unless someone proclaims Him?" Therefore, we see the emphasis is not on a preacher, but on preaching.

We may think the work of evangelism is only for those who are called to be evangelists. Granted, there are people in the church whom God has raised up to be evangelists, and certainly evangelism is not limited to those who preach to hundreds or thousands at a time. I have seen many individual believers who obviously have this gift.

While it is true that some are called to be evangelists, it is also true that every Christian is called to evangelize. Many times, however, we avoid sharing our faith, deciding instead to just live it out, be a good witness, and leave the preaching to others.

Yet in 1 Corinthians 1:21, it says, "For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe."

This does not mean that we need to scream and yell and wave a Bible to get the point across. What it does mean is that we are to recognize the primary way God has chosen to reach the lost is through the proclamation of the gospel--by people. God has chosen the agency of His proclaimed Word to bring people to salvation.

Who Will Go?

"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?' Then I said, 'Here am I! Send me.' " -Isaiah 6:8

God said in the presence of Isaiah, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" In a sense, God is still asking this question. Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Will you go? Will you stand in the gap?

If God's Holy Spirit were to search among us today, I wonder if He would find men or women willing to stand in the gap. Willing to pray. Willing to be available. Willing to reach out to those who do not know Him.

A lot of Christians will say, "I'm too timid. I'm afraid of this and that." But I think a lot of Christians don't really have a burden for those who don't know the Lord. I think if that burden is burning with enough passion, a believer will work through the obstacles.

That is not to say there aren't things we should learn so we can share our faith more effectively. But if the burden is really there, a believer will go out and do something with it.

The bottom line is that sharing our faith isn't really a big deal to many of us. This is why it is so important that we have a God-given burden for unbelievers.

I would rather make every mistake to be made in sharing my faith than to never do anything. At least I will hopefully learn something from my mistakes.

But when we do nothing for fear of being rejected or for fear we will not meet with resounding success, we are really missing what God has called us to do.

Loving the New Coldplay Album

I am absolutely loving the new Coldplay album, Viva la Vida. Definitely a great download. I am a huge Coldplay fan, only wish I could have gotten tickets to see them at the Verizon Center, originally schedule for July 3rd, now moved to August 3rd.

My Prayer for My Boy

Lord, we pray for Torin as he grows in his mommy's womb. That he would grow strong and healthy, that he would develop like he should. Dear Lord, you created little Torin in Your own image, he is fearfully and wonderfully made and You oh God know Him already. I pray that Your spirit would be poured into his life as he develops.

Oh God, while we are waiting for our precious little boy, prepare Lora and me as parents. Help us to be the best parents that you can make us be through Your guidance and Your wisdom. Give us such a heart and love for our child as we wait for the day that he will arrive.

I pray for an healthy birth for him and his mommy. Lord, help everything to go smoothly according Your will and plans. Lord, we are looking forward to the day when we will be able to hold Torin in our arms, knowing that You have entrusted Him to our care, to love him, to provide his physical, spiritual, and emotional needs.

Help us, oh God to raise Torin to be a devoted Christ follower, who will love You with all of his heart, his mind and his soul. Help us to teach him the way that he needs to go, that he will develop his own personal faith in You. Lord, we pray for Your plans and purpose for his life, not our own.

We are so thankful for this wonderful and beautiful blessing that You are allowing us to invest in and to build a godly legacy and heritage in. Thank You Lord for this incredible blessing that You have provided. We are looking forward to loving this child after the example that You have set before us. Lord, we trust You for every provision we need as we raise Torin Christopher...he is Your child.

In Jesus Most Holy and Precious Name, Amen

Soundtrack of My Life

I have been listening to 3 Doors Down's album 3 Doors Down. The whole entire album is a soundtrack of my life and the every song really resonates a lot to where I have been at one time in my life. I believe the songs hold a lot of truth of what people, such as myself are going through in their life. The songs speak to what so many people are thinking about, but not talking about within their lives and hearts.

Love these songs...

It's the Only One You've Got

How do you know where your going,
When you don't know where you've been?
You hide the shame that your not showing,
And you wont let anyone in.
A crowded street can be a quiet place when your walking alone.

And now you think that you're the only one
Who doesn't have to try.
And you wont have to feel,
If you're afraid to fight,
Then I guess you never will.

You hide behind your walls of 'maybe nevers'
Forgetting that theres something more,
Then just knowing better.
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not.
You've got to live this life your given,
like its the only one you've got.

Memories have left you broken.
And the scars have never healed.
The emptiness in you is growing.
With so little left to feel.
You're scared to look back on the days before...
You're too tired to move on.

And now you think that you're the only one
Who doesn't have to try.
And you wont have to feel,
If you're afraid to fly,
Then I guess you never will.

You hide behind your walls of 'maybe nevers'
Forgetting that theres something more,
Then just knowing better.
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not.
You've got to live this life your given,
like its the only one you've got.

Oh, what will it take?
Oh, to get you to say that I'll try.
And what would you say if this was the last day of your life?

You hide behind your walls of 'maybe nevers'
Forgetting that theres something more,
Then just knowing better.
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not.
You've got to live this life your given,
like its the only one you've got.

You hide behind your walls of 'maybe nevers'
Forgetting that theres something more,
Then just knowing better.
Your mistakes do not define you now
They tell you who you're not.
You've got to live this life your given,
like its the only one you've got.

It's Not My Time

Looking back at the beginning of this
And how life was
Just you and me and love and all of our friends
Living life like an ocean
Now the currents slowly pulling me down
It's getting harder to breath
It won't be too long and I'll be going under
Can you save me from this

('Cause) It's not my time,
I'm not going
There's a fear in me
It's not showing
This could be the end of me
And everything I know
Oh, I won't go

I look ahead to all the plans that we made
And the dreams that we had
I'm in a world that tries to take them away
Oh, but I'm taking them back
All this time I've just been to blind to understand
What should matter to me
My friend, this life we live
Is not what we have, it's what we believe

(And) It's not my time
I'm not going
There's a fear in me
It's not showing
This could be the end of me
And everything I know
But, It's not my time
I'm not going
There's a fear in me
Now I know that
This could be the end of me
And everything I know
Oh, I won't go
I won't go

(solo)

There might be more than you believe
(There might be more than you believe)
There might be more than you can see
But, It's not my time
I'm not going
There's a fear in me
It's not showing
This could be the end of me
And everything I know
But, It's not my time
I'm not going
There's a will in me
Now it's gonna show
This could be the end of me
And everything I know, oh
There might be more than you believe
(There might be more than you believe)
There might be more than you can see
And I won't go
No I won't go down (yeahh)

Doing Some Studying

Looking through and studying the book of James for potential message idea for hybrid weekend at NCC.

We are talking about a few ideas for the One Prayer series for the three campus pastors here at NCC. We are speaking the weekend of July 5-6. Make US Doers is on our heart and our prayer as we beginning to look towards this weekend together.

A few things that stick out throughout the book of James...

Doers...
Play Offense rather than defense
Are in control of their emotions, of what they say and what they do
Do things with absolute intentionality
Are motivated by a love for God and a love for others
Are proactive and not reactive

As Christ followers, our faith must be accompany with action...you can't have one with out the other.

Ultimately, doers are a people of action...our actions must speak louder than our words.

Just a few thoughts so far on the initial study of James.

Daily Caffeination 06/17/08

Moved to Action

"And they said to me, 'The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.' So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven." -Nehemiah 1:3-4

Alexander McLaren said, "You tell me the depth of a Christian's compassion, and I will tell you the measure of his usefulness." How deep does your compassion go? God is looking for such people.

How does it affect you, knowing there are many people who do not know Christ, knowing they are basically on their way to a certain judgment? Does it move you? Until you are moved in the depths of your soul, you will not be moved to take any action.

Nehemiah was a man in a position of great influence and power as he served under the king. He was not a preacher or priest or scribe. He was what we might call a layman today. But Nehemiah loved God.

One day, someone told him about the plight of the Jews and how the city of Jerusalem was now lying in ruins. Nehemiah began to weep and pray and say, "Lord, what can I do about this problem?" After his weeping came working. After his despair came determination.

The devastation of Jerusalem touched him, and he wanted to do something about it. So he prayed and he devised a plan. Then that plan began to unfold.

These are two essential ingredients for effectively sharing our faith. It must start with a God-given burden, leading us to prayer. And then we need to go out and do something.

Great Weekend

Had a great and exhausting weekend.

Friday night we had an amazing A Night at the Movies event at Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill. We showed the movie Ratatouille. We had 480 people from the Capitol Hill community for this family/community event. We were able to hand free popcorn, icee pops, capri sun and juice boxes. Good times!

Saturday evening we continued the One Prayer series with Pastor Craig Groeshel from Lifechurch.tv with his one prayer...Make Us One. Great message. Great challenge. We also celebrated communion at all of locations. I love leading communion.

After the Saturday evening service, we had a connection cookout at an NCCer house, where about 33 people came out about half new NCCers or guests. What a great time of connecting and meeting some really awesome people.

Sunday of course was Father's Day...I still can't believe I am going to be a father a little guy. :-) Lora made me a great dinner yesterday. My prayer as I go into fatherhood, that i can be the best father possible and be an example to my little guy. (Torin, if you read this blog post many years from now...you are not born yet, you are in your mommy's tummy...but I already love you so much and I am looking forward to hanging with you, playing sports, playing cars, going to ball games with you. You will be here before we know it, I can't wait.)

We did the three service at Union Station yesterday, each service went very well. I feel like the Union Station is really moving along, we have an amazing team of volunteers who serve so faithfully. I love serving with my awesome team. I also have an intern extraordinaire Ryan Zempel who is a huge help to me at Union. Ryan has become my right hand man at Union, I appreciate all that he does.

Great weekend, love hearing some great stories from this weekend as well.

Thank you God for that you are doing.

A Passion for the Lost

"My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed--cut off from Christ!--if that would save them." Romans 9:2-3

The apostle Paul had something essential for effective evangelism: a God-given burden for those who did not know Jesus Christ. In his case, the burden was for his own people, the Jews. He cared. It burned inside him.

General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, once said that his desire, had it been possible, would be to dangle his evangelism trainees over hell for 24 hours. That way, they could see the reality that awaits those who do not know Jesus Christ.

That wouldn't have been necessary for Paul, who spoke of his love and burning passion for unbelievers. I think it is there for us in Scripture so that we don't become so obsessed with our own struggles and spiritual growth that we forget about people who need to know Christ.

I think Paul makes an amazing statement in Romans 9 when he says, in essence, "If it were possible, I would give up my hope of eternal life so that others who do not know could come to faith." That's a pretty dramatic statement.

As believers, you and I have a responsibility to those outside the church--those outside the faith. If God's love is really working in our lives, it should motivate us to do something for Him.

Do you have a God-given burden for those who do not know Jesus Christ? If you don't, do you want one?

If you pray that God will give you this burden, then be careful. The results could be life-changing. You just may be surprised at how quickly He answers you.

Becoming New

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." -2 Corinthians 5:17

The Scripture is full of descriptions of the believer's new spiritual life. God promises He will give us a new heart. In Ezekiel 36:26, God says that He will "give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; [He] will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."

God also will give us a new song. The psalmist wrote, "He has put a new song in my mouth--praise to our God . . ." (Psalm 40:3).

The Bible also promises there will be a new self. Ephesians 4:22--24 says, "That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness."

As believers, our spiritual lives are new, but we still have the capacity to sin. And though we have the capacity of sin, the tyranny and penalty of sin in our lives has been broken. However, sin's potential has not been fully removed, because we have two natures within us that are constantly at battle: a new nature and an old nature.

As you know, it's very easy to sin. It comes naturally to us. But the new nature doesn't come naturally; it comes supernaturally. These two natures are battling, and each day, you determine which nature you are going to build up.

Which will prevail? The one you build up the most. Every time you obey God and resist sin, you are building the new nature.

True Conversion

" 'Yes, I am going to send you to the Gentiles, to open their eyes so they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God's people, who are set apart by faith in me.' " (Acts 26:17--18)

When the apostle Paul stood before King Agrippa and explained what God had called him to do in proclaiming the gospel, he broke it down into one of the most clear presentations I have found anywhere in the Bible.

Paul said that God had called him to proclaim this message, which was to open the eyes of his listeners that they might turn from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to God, and that they might receive the forgiveness of sin and an inheritance among those who are sanctified.

Here, we see three steps. One, your eyes are opened. Two, you turn from darkness to light. Three, you turn from the power of Satan to God. As a result, you are forgiven and receive adoption and an inheritance among God's people.

Many people have taken step one, but they have never made it to step two. They have had their eyes opened and have seen there is a God and there is a devil. They have also seen there is a choice to be made.

They have seen that Jesus Christ is the answer to their problems and that they need to trust in Him and turn from their sin. They intellectually agree with these things. But they haven't taken step two, which is turning from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God.

And until you have taken that step, you are not truly converted.

The Problem with Pride

"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." -1 John 1:8

I had to laugh when I heard the story of two men who approached the great British preacher, C. H. Spurgeon, one day and told him, "Spurgeon, we have reached sinless perfection."

"Really?" he asked.

"Yes," they said, "We are absolutely perfect."

Spurgeon was holding a pitcher of water at the time, and he poured it on their heads. When they began to react like any other sinners would, he found out just how perfect they were.

You see, the people who walk around claiming to have reached sinless perfection are victims of one of the most powerful yet subtle sins: pride. None of us will reach sinless perfection--not in this life.

Granted, before we were Christians, we were under the control and power of sin. We went along with whatever our sinful natures dictated.

But something dramatic happened when we received Christ. We were changed. The Bible says that we became new creations in Christ. Old things passed away and all things became new (see 2 Corinthians 5:17).

That is not to say we still don't struggle with sin and temptation. The Scripture clearly teaches that we will sin and that we will have lapses.

Although the Bible tells me I will sin, there is a difference between sinning and being sorry for it, and sinning habitually, persistently, and continually. If someone claims to be a Christian and yet continues in sin, my question is whether that person has ever been truly converted.

Some people wonder whether such a Christian ever could lose his or her salvation. I would suggest that another question should be asked instead: Did he or she ever experience salvation to begin with?

The Key to Holiness

"Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more kindness and forgiveness? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?" Romans 6:1-2

Sadly, there are many believers today who live with the misconception that they must do something to earn God's approval.

When they have had a good week and have been reading their Bibles or doing certain good deeds for the Lord, they feel that God will be pleased. But when they have had a hard week, when they have fallen, when they have sinned, they think God is not pleased with them.

Sometimes they believe they shouldn't even go to church or read the Bible. "Why bother?" they think. "God is not pleased with me. I don't have His favor. It would be hypocritical for me to do that."

All the while, they don't realize they have God's unconditional favor and love regardless of what they do. But that is not a license to sin. It is an incentive to respond to Him in love.

If, as believers, we can truly get hold of what this means, if we can understand that it is not a license to live as we please, then it should be an incentive for us to serve the Lord, love Him, and show gratitude toward the One who loves us unconditionally, knowing us for what we are. An understanding of this truth can revolutionize our lives.

In some people's estimation, holy living--which is keeping rules and regulations--will bring salvation. But holy living--which we are not capable of, to start with--will not bring salvation. However, salvation will produce holy living. If you are truly saved, it will result in changes in your lifestyle.

The Power of Impartation

"But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life." -Romans 6:22

Are you happy with the way that you are right now? Are there things in your life you would like to see dramatically altered?

Perhaps, like many other people, you make bold resolutions whenever a new year rolls around. You make plans regarding what changes you want to make in the coming year. But it's not long until you have gone back on those great resolutions.

In the same way, as Christians we are often defeated in day-to-day living because we don't really realize how many resources God has placed in our spiritual account. A lot of times we say, "God help me. God, give me this. God, give me that." Meanwhile, God is saying, "Will you please go check your account? I have deposited more than you could ever use. Check it out."

Can you imagine a soldier fighting a battle with no ammunition, while he was sitting on a bunker filled with thousands and thousands of rounds of ammo, more than he could use in a thousand wars? He has more than he needs right under him, but he is trying to fight the battle without the resources he has.

Our defeat in our battle with sin and temptation lies largely in our ignorance of the facts. In Jesus Christ there is power to live a new life and to no longer be under sin's control. That power is not in imitation, because you can imitate Jesus all you want and try to be like Him. The power comes from impartation.

God has done something for you, and now it is for you to appropriate that divine provision.

True Conversion

"And when people escape from the wicked ways of the world by learning about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up with sin and become its slave again, they are worse off than before." -2 Peter 2:20

Sometimes we hear about well-known people who claim to have made a commitment to Jesus Christ. Often, it is around election time. When they address Christians, they speak of their great faith in God. After the elections, we seldom hear about it again.

Then there are people who say they are believers, but a month or two later, they go back to their old ways again. They say, "I tried Christianity, but it didn't work for me." But in reality, they never really found Christ.

Others will turn to God when they hit hard times. Awhile later, you see them going back to their old ways, and you wonder what happened. I would suggest that many of these people never were converted at all. They went through the motions, but Jesus Christ never became a part of their lives. Often, they end up worse than before.

When Jesus Christ truly comes into our lives, He takes up residence. And He doesn't just do a basic housecleaning; He does a thorough one. There is real change. But when a house has only been swept, that is, when someone has made only moral changes, he or she is still vulnerable to the Enemy. This is why we must recognize the futility of simply turning over a new leaf or making a few New Year's resolutions. We must realize the problem is deeper than our moral sins. We must get to the heart of the matter and have Jesus Christ take residence in our lives and change us from the inside out.

Inside Out

"You try to look like upright people outwardly, but inside your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness." -Matthew 23:28

People make changes in their lives for many reasons. Often it is when they face a crisis in life. It might be a heart attack. It might be the loss of a spouse through death or divorce. It might some other crisis that hits them, and they begin to evaluate their priorities and take stock of their lives. They determine to make changes.

But often the same people who vow to change end up going back to their old ways. We often hear of celebrities being admitted to drug rehabilitation centers. We hear about the great changes they have made. They tell their stories on television and write books about it. But then a few months later, we read that they have gone back to their old ways. Why? Because they have made moral changes in their lives, but they haven't gotten to the root of their problem, which is the absence of God in their lives.

Jesus warned the Pharisees, "First wash the inside of the cup, and then the outside will become clean, too" (Matthew 23:26). Jesus was telling them that they were missing the point when they only concentrated on the outward. They must first take care of the inward.

The clear mandate given to the church from the lips of Jesus Himself was to go into this world and preach the gospel, because when people truly find Him, it will change their lifestyle. If, as believers, we allow other things to detract us from this calling, then we are also missing the point. As Jesus said, "First wash the inside, . . . and then the outside will become clean, too." That is where we must focus our efforts.

Straining toward the Goal

"I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." -Philippians 3:14

The word used for "press" in Philippians 3:14 carries in the meaning of "strong exertion." Every muscle of the runner is burning. He can see the ribbon. He has only a few more feet to go in the race. He must press on.

It is the same in our lives as Christians. There are times when it just gets hard. But it is then that we learn what it means to walk by faith and not by feeling. You can't live on an emotional high as a Christian. You must pace yourself in this race you are running. You can't expect that every time you go to church, you will have some great emotional encounter with God. Sometimes you will. Sometimes you won't. Growing up and learning to walk by faith are part of spiritual maturity.

When you first made a commitment to Christ, you discovered the joy and wonderful peace that comes from being forgiven. But you must realize that this is a walk by faith. You must press on even when it gets hard.

Maybe, as you have been running, you have found yourself in a place where you are dragging burdens, sins, or other things along. Maybe you find that you don't even know why you are running the race anymore. Maybe you have become discouraged.

Look up and remember that it is Jesus whom you are running for. Two thousand years ago, He loved you so much that He went to the cross and died there. He shed His blood for you. Then He rose again from the dead. Because He did that for you, you can live for Him today. He will give you the strength.

Don't Look Back

"But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal. . . ." -Philippians 3:13-14

If you want to run the race of life successfully, then don't look back. If you ever have run a race and looked over your shoulder to see what your competitor was doing, then you know that looking back can break your stride and ultimately cause you to lose the race.

Paul, along the same lines, says in Philippians 3:13, "Forgetting those things which are behind. . . . " If you are going to walk with the Lord, then you must forget the things that are behind. Here, the word "forget" doesn't mean a failure to remember as much as it means no longer being influenced or affected by the past.

Here is what you need to do: Forget the things that are behind. While you may not be able erase them from your memory, you don't need to let them influence you. Sometimes we dredge up the things God has forgiven and forgotten. The Lord says, "I will remember their sins no more" (Jeremiah 31:34). Yet many times we will bring past sins up, forgetting the fact that our God has a big eraser. If God has forgiven my sins and forgotten them, then I need to leave them behind, learn from my mistakes, not do the same thing again, and move forward. Why should we choose to remember what God has chosen to forget?

Summing up the Early Years of My Life

If there is one song that sums up the early years of my life, those years from the age 13 to about 20 years old it would definitely be It's Been Awhile by Staind. For many years this song characterized my life. As a teenager and through my early adult years I hurt so many people including myself. I was messed up.

Psalm 27:10:
"Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close."

It's Been Awhile

It's been a while
Since I could hold my head up high
and it's been a while
Since I first saw you
It's been a while
since i could stand on my own two feet again
and it's been a while
since i could call you
But everything I can't remember as messed up as it may seem
the consequences that I've rendered
I've stretched myself beyond my means

It's been a while
since i could say that i wasn't addicted and
It's been a while
Since I could say I love myself as well and
It's been a while
Since I've gone and messed things up just like I always do
It's been a while
But all that stuff seems to disappear when I'm with You
But everything I can't remember as messed up as it may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
I've gone and messed things up again

Why must I feel this way?
Just make this go away
Just one more peaceful day

Its been awhile
Since I could look at myself straight
and it's been awhile
Since I said I'm sorry
It's been awhile
Since I've seen the way the candles light your face
It's been awhile
But I can still remember just the way you taste
But everything I can't remember as messed up as it may seem
I know it's me I cannot blame this on my mother
She did the best she could for me

It's been a while
Since I could hold my head up high
and it's been a while since I said I'm sorry

Those in Whom God Delights

"His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor His delight in the legs of a man; the Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love." - Psalm 147:10

Mammon and power are the ruling strongholds of the workplace. If you possess either of these, then you will be courted by those who serve the workplace in hopes of increasing market share. It is a competitive environment that often gives way to decisions and actions that are dictated by the financial bottom line. A recent newspaper article stated that employers are requiring workers to put more time into their jobs, often requiring weekend work in order to be more competitive. For the Christian worker, this brings pressures on the family and will result in "lost market share" in the spiritual realm.

The Lord has a different measuring stick. The Lord is not impressed with your ability or what you can do for Him. Only one thing delights Him-people who fear Him and put their hope in His unfailing love. What does it mean to fear God and place our hope in His love? It means we acknowledge that God is the source of all that we are. He is the one who gives us the ability to work, plan, and execute. He does not want us to look to our abilities, but to His abilities. Sometimes it is difficult to balance these two perspectives. However, if we ask God to show us how to maintain this balance, He will do it. Put your hope in His unfailing love today. Then you will know that your heavenly Father is looking on you as a proud Father.

Great Weekend at NCC...Great New Song

Huge props to our Worship Coordinator Steph Modder, she introduced the song, Solution from Hillsong United this weekend for our closing song. She and the band rocked it out this morning. I love the lyrics, love the heart of the song. What a great song to challenge us as Christ followers.

I also want to mention that Pastor Heather did an amazing job this bring the Word. She shared about Community...John 17, one of the finals prayers of Christ before he went to the cross. Community needs to be the picture of Christ.

On a personal note, community and relationships are so essential for us as Christ followers. We can't live out our faith alone we need other...Hebrews 10:24-25. Others also need us. It is so key to live out our faith in the context of community. As Pastor Heater shared we are created by community, the Trinity. We are created for community. Great weekend! Great worship! Great message!

SOLUTION

It is not a human right
To stare not fight
While broken nations dream
Open up our eyes, so blind
That we might find
The Mercy for the need

Singin Hey Now
Fill our hearts with your compassion
Hey Now
As we hold to our confession
Yeah

It is not too far a cry
To much to try
To help the least of these
Politics will not decide
If we should rise
And be your hands and feet

Singing Hey Now
Fill our hearts with your compassion
Hey Now
As we hold to our confession

Woah-oh-oh,
God be the solution
Woah-oh-oh
We will be Your hands and be Your feet.
Yeah, yeah

Higher than a circumstance
Your promise stands
Your love for all to see
Higher than protest line and dollar signs
Your love is all we need

Only you can mend the broken heart
And cause the blind to see
Erase complete the sinners past
And set the captives free
Only you can take the widows cry
And cause her heart to sing
Be a father to the fatherless
Our savior and our king
We will be your hands, we will be your feet
We will run this race
On the darkest place, we will be your light
We will be your light

We will be your hands , we will be your feet
We will run this race for the least of these
In the darkest place, we will be your light
We will be your light (we’ll say/sing?)

We will run we will run
We will (run with the solution?) (2x)

We will be your hands we will be your feet
We will run this race for the least of these
In the darkest place we will be your light
We will be your light
